Today on the main British news programme 'Today' on BBC Radio 4 there was a discussion about the Cobbe portrait between Stanley Wells and an eminent art historian (whose name I did not catch), who doubted very much whether this was an authentic representation of Shakespeare. Wells's main justification was the provenance, saying that the portrait was from the same collection as that of the Earl of Southampton - hardly a very convincing argument! Typically there was no mention of the important research undertaken in Germany, especially by Professor Hammerschmidt-Hummel. I do hope that her press release will be available at the Stratford exhibition displaying the Cobbe portrait.
